Guide To: ECE R29 - Cabs of commercial vehicles

Guide To: UNECE R29 - Cabs of commercial vehicles

UN ECE Regulation No. 29 provides the uniform provisions concerning the approval of vehicles with regard to the protection of occupants in the driver’s cab of commercial vehicles. This regulation ensures that the structural integrity of the cab protects the driver and passengers during accidents, including head-on impacts or vehicle overturns.

Scope of the Regulation

UN ECE R29 applies to: - Commercial vehicles with a separate driver's cab, particularly vehicles in categories N1, N2, and N3 (which include light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks).

Key Features of UN ECE R29

  1. Crash Test Procedures:

    • Vehicles are subjected to multiple crash tests to ensure the structural stability of the cab:
      • Test A: A frontal impact test that evaluates the cab’s resistance to a head-on collision.
      • Test B: A front pillar impact test simulates a 90° rollover accident to assess the strength of the cab's A-pillars.
      • Test C: A roof strength test simulates the forces experienced in a 180° rollover, assessing the cab’s ability to prevent roof collapse.
  2. Survival Space:

    • After the cab undergoes the required crash tests, it must maintain a survival space sufficient to accommodate a test manikin or a human dummy (Hybrid II or III). This ensures that the cab does not collapse in a way that endangers the occupants.
  3. Design and Construction:

    • The regulation outlines how cabs should be designed and mounted to minimize the risk of injury. For example, the cab must remain attached to the chassis frame during an accident, and none of the doors should open as a result of the crash.
    • The tests allow manufacturers to use computer simulations or calculations to demonstrate compliance, which offers flexibility in cab design innovation.
  4. Cab Testing:

    • Manufacturers may choose to subject one or multiple cabs to these tests. If multiple cabs are used, the same cab must undergo both phases of Test C (roof strength).
  5. Marking and Approval:

    • Each vehicle type that meets the requirements of R29 receives an approval mark, which includes the letter “E” and the approval number. This mark is affixed to the vehicle and indicates that the cab has passed the required tests.

Conclusion

UN ECE R29 plays a critical role in ensuring that commercial vehicle cabs are designed to protect occupants in the event of an accident. This regulation helps manufacturers create safer vehicles while providing a clear framework for testing and approval.
