Thinwall cable vs standard automotive cable – why?

We often get questions from our customers about thinwall cable, and why they should consider it over standard cable. Well we’ve taken a number of them and we’ve written the answers down for you…

Thinwall cable: What is it?

In a nutshell, thinwall cable is cable with a thinner, harder grade of PVC outer insulation. Each cable is made from a number of stranded copper wire conductors which are then hard-grade PVC insulated.

As the name suggests it is thinner and actually lighter than standard automotive and marine cables. There are other benefits too such as its ability to take a higher current than standard cables.

For these reasons, this type of cable is the preference to standard PVC cables and has been commonly used in vehicles since 1995. In fact, it is used by the leading OEM manufacturers either in part or whole vehicle construction.

Are there any other benefits to using thinwall cable?

Well yes there are actually, they have a far greater resistance to petrol, diesel and general abrasion caused by panel edges and vibration. They are also suitable for use in greater temperature extremes without degrading. The typical temperature range we expect to see is -40ºC to +105ºC, with some going as high as +120ºC…

What voltages can I use thinwall cable for?

While it is designed for 12v and 24v systems in automotive and marine applications, you can use it up to 60v (DC currents). Remember you can always contact us for specialist advice prior to deciding which cable to use.

What approvals does Dun-Bri’s cable achieve?

Like all OEM grade products, we ensure our products meet and in many cases exceed the product requirements. In this case, our thinwall cable complies or is approved to the following;

  • ISO 6722 Grade B approved thermoplastic PVC lead-free insulation
  • Our copper conductors are compliant with EN 13602 and ISO 6722/LV122 Type B
